This week New Orleans is removing four prominent Confederate monuments, the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by some as representing racism and white supremacy. Nationally, the debate over Confederate symbols has become heated since 2015 when nine black parishioners were killed at South Carolina church by a white supremacist.
