BNY Mellon Grand Classics: Pictures at an Exhibition
Currently artistic director and chief conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra, music director of the Shanghai Symphony and artistic director of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, distinguished Chinese conductor Long Yu makes his Pittsburgh Symphony debut with Pictures at an Exhibition. Mussorgsky’s showpiece for piano, later orchestrated by Ravel, vividly depicts 10 paintings by Mussorgsky’s friend Viktor Hartmann. Principal viola Randolph Kelly takes center stage for Paganini’s virtuosic Sonata per la Grand Viola, which was given its Pittsburgh premiere by Kelly.
Some Senate Democrats want to delay the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch until after the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and the Russians. Democrats still smarting over Republican's refusal last year to consider Judge Merrick Garland, Obama's nominee, because they wanted the next president elect to choose. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer contends if the shoe were on the other foot and a Democratic president was under investigation, Republicans wouldn't be filling a Supreme Court seat.
