The House Armed Services Committee approved a measure requiring women to register for the military draft, this after the Defense Department lifted all gender-based restrictions on front-line combat units. An amendment by Republican Congressmen and former Marine Duncan Hunter would prohibit women being drafted into combat duty, disallowing their entry into infantry and special operations positions. Democratic Congresswoman Jackie Speier supporting Hunter's measure added "If we want equality in this country for women and not be discriminated against, then we should be willing to support a universal conscription".
