A recent RAND Corporation study found moving high school students start time to 8:30 a.m. could add billions to the U.S. economy over the next decade. The increases would result from improved high-school graduation rates leading to better jobs and fewer costs associated with sleep-related car crashes, obesity, and mental illness. Arguments against delaying start times is increased costs from rescheduling bus routes and school activities, as well the inability of working parents to usher their adolescent children off to school resulting in possible increased absenteeism.
