Last week the Pa. Pension Reform Act became law changing retirement savings plans for future state government and public school employees hired after 2018. The plans move away from guaranteed pensions to a part or whole 401(k)-style platform much like those in the private sector. Employees will have three retirement savings options but once decided, it's final. Some critics say it doesn't address the present $70 billion unfunded liability while others believe it will result in no savings and hurt future recruitment of qualified applicants.
